A Look at Causes of Feline Hair Loss
One of the problem with owning cats is that they constantly shed fur. However, health issues can sometimes lead to abnormal amounts of hair loss. This is known as alopecia, and it can be indicative of something seriously wrong with your cat. All owners need to be concerned if they notice that their cat is losing hair or developing bald spots. You’ll find that hair loss in felines falls into one of two main categories, pruritic and non-pruritic. Pruritic hair loss will cause your pets skin to itch and have him scratching, biting, or licking the places on his body that are affected. Non-pruritic hair loss can be painful. However, cats can often lick the area.
Pruritic hair loss is usually caused by allergic reactions. Allergic reactions are common in both humans and felines. Reactions to flea or insect bites . Insect problems can be prevented by periodic medication from a vet. On the other hand, the allergy may be attributable to other reasons such as changing your kitty’s food or exposure to dust, pollen, and other irritants.
Felines can also be affected by a fungus that causes ringworm. Cats frequently lose their hair if a case of ringworm isn’t caught early enough. Circular lesions are a common sign that your cat has ringworm. To combat this condition, your cat will need anti-fungal cream. The condition will usually go away on its on after three months, then it will take another three months for the hair to grow back.
Hyperthyroidism, dry skin, stress, injury, and Cushing’s disease are all other causes of feline hair loss. Feline symmetrical alopecia may also become a problem in some cats. Hormone injections can usually be used to treat this condition. It’s important not to try to treat the condition on your own if you don’t truly know what’s causing the hair loss.
